On the 9th October 2024, two SPI Members were presented with Maria de Sousa Awards – 4th edition (2024):

Joana Gaifem
Post-doctoral fellow at Salomé Pinho’s lab, i3S, U. Porto “Feeding immunity: glycans as nutritional players in host-microbiome dynamics in IBD”

Samuel Gonçalves
Post-doctoral fellow at Agostinho Carvalho’s lab, ICVS, U. Minho “Regulation of antifungal immunity by cholesterol metabolism in respiratory fungal disease”

The Maria de Sousa Award is promoted by the Portuguese Medical Association and the BIAL Foundation, and honours the memory of the pioneer Portuguese immunologist, Maria de Sousa. The Award supports up young Portuguese scientific researchers, aged 35 or under, with scientific projects in the area of Health Sciences, including a mandatory internship in an international center of excellence: https://www.bialfoundation.com/com/awards/maria-de-sousa-award
